Judge Thomas James Crabtree appointed new Chief Judge of the BC Provincial Court effective April 8, 2010

Judge Thomas (Tom) James Crabtree, who has been a judge of the BC Provincial Court since 2000, has been appointed the new Chief Judge of the court effective April 8, 2010.
Judge Crabtree graduated from the University of Victoria and practiced litigation in Chilliwack, where he was appointed to the Provincial Court bench in 2000.

Judge Crabtree has been Director and the representative of the court on the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC’s board of directors. He has also been a member of various court committees and has participated in the Provincial Court Students’ Journalism Program. Further details of his background and career are available online.

To select a new Chief Judge, the Attorney General heard advice from an independent Advisory Panel that included the Acting Deputy Attorney General, a former Vancouver city councilor Kim Capri, a professor of criminology and social justice, Daryl Plecas, and Acting Chief Judge Threlfall. The Advisory Panel reported on the candidates to the Attorney General, who made a recommendation to cabinet.
