BC judicial appointments announced

Special June 4 sitting of court will mark the passing of the Honourable Chief Judge Hugh Stansfield

A memorial service will be held at a special 9 am sitting of court on June 4, 2009 in the Law Courts Great Hall to remember the Honourable Chief Judge Hugh Stansfield, who was Chief Judge of the BC Provincial Court since July 1, 2005.

Stansfield continued to sit as Chief Judge while he battled cancer, and is remembered by Acting Chief Judge James Threlfall for his commitment even in the face of his illness:

We all knew that Hugh had cancer, but he wouldn’t let it prevent him from carrying out his duties to the court and public. . . Hugh brought to the Court incredible energy, commitment, and strength of character.

CBABC President Miriam Maisonville noted Stansfield’s involvement in legal education and stated that “Above all he will be remembered for his compassion, kindness and courage”.
