Who should attend: Civil and criminal litigators who wish to develop, hone, or renew the skill fundamental to the conduct of a trial—direct examination.
Learning level: Fundamental
In the world of trial techniques, cross examination gets a lot of attention while direct examination is usually taken for granted. We often assume direct examination is straightforward. After all, it’s just your witness telling his or her story, no? Experienced counsel know that it is not quite so simple. As it is probably true that more cases are won or lost on direct examination than cross examination. In this vein, this full day program aims to improve your skills in direct examination through a review of the principles and practices that underline effective preparation and execution of direct examination.
After this program, you will be able to:
- effectively prepare your witness for court
- avoid evidentiary missteps which could seriously de-rail your case
- manage and control your witness should he or she become problematic at trial
- confidently handle demonstrative aides in your witness' evidence
- avoid problems and make it easier for the court to receive your case
