The Family Law Act and Family Violence: Independent and Impartial Parenting Assessments
Author: The Honourable Donna Martinson, QC, LLM, Vancouver, BC

This paper deals with what is required of parenting assessors as independent, impartial "experts" when dealing with allegations of family violence. It discusses what a contextual analysis might look like in the family violence context. It raises challenges to decision makers when assessing credibility, especially when the credibility of women alleging family violence is at issue. Donna Martinson last presented for CLEBC in January 2013 for the course, The Family Law Act: Everything You Always Wanted To Know.

The paper was originally presented at a workshop for the College of Psychologists and was recently distributed at the CLEBC workshop, Family Violence Screening Training for Litigators and Dispute Resolution Professionals
