Once every two years, CLEBC honours extraordinary individuals for their contribution to the enhancement of learning in the BC legal community with the Leaders in Learning Award.

This year’s recipients The Honourable Marvyn Koenigsberg and Sandra Cunningham, KC have demonstrated incredible commitment to mentorship, role modeling, and delivering learning opportunities to lawyers over the past two decades.

In particular, Marvyn and Sandy have chaired 18 years of CLEBC’s Winning Advocacy Skills Workshop. An intensive and highly interactive three-day course, this unique workshop allows lawyers to improve their advocacy skills through one-on-one feedback sessions with senior members of the bench and bar. Through this exceptional workshop, Marvyn and Sandy have created an environment where less experienced counsel can be mentored in a very real and effective way by senior counsel and with participation from the highest levels of the judiciary.

Each year, Marvyn and Sandy have dedicated many hours over many months to planning, recruiting, and encouraging attendance for the workshop. This passionate, unflagging dedication to training lawyers to be the best courtroom advocates they can be is how Marvyn and Sandy have worked to increase access to justice for all through better advocacy skills.

Marvyn and Sandy are exceptional role models for both the students and instructors of the workshop, showing the legal community that giving thoughtful feedback and constructive training to fellow lawyers is a worthy and valuable endeavour.

In addition to the workshop, Marvyn and Sandy have also been excellent teachers at many other CLEBC courses and keen contributors to CLEBC publications over the years. With their prolific volunteerism and passion for assisting lawyers in honing solid advocacy skills, Marvyn and Sandy truly exemplify the values celebrated by the Leaders in Learning Award.

CLEBC will deeply miss Marvyn and Sandy as chairs of the Winning Advocacy Skills Workshop as they have retired from that role as of 2016, and we look forward to working with these extraordinary leaders on future projects in learning.

It is with great pleasure for CLEBC to present the 2017 Leaders in Learning Award to The Honourable Marvyn Koenigsberg and Sandra Cunningham, KC.
