Despite recent steps to stream-line the civil litigation process, the cost of retaining a lawyer, particularly in a complicated case, remains outside of the means of most people. Not surprisingly, there appears to be an increase in the number of self-represented litigants trying to access justice through the courts; some have valid claims and others do not. Most lawyers find it difficult enough to navigate through the civil litigation process so it is understandable that most self-represented litigants find the task daunting and, more often than not, get things wrong. The vast majority of self-represented litigants are well-meaning, though often misguided, and their lack of objectivity significantly increases the costs of litigation for the defendant and presents a unique set of challenges for the defending lawyer. At this course you will receive some practical tips, strategies, and advice (including ethical considerations) for dealing with self-represented litigants.
Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 1 hour which will involve aspects of professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management.
