With the increased interactivity brought by 21st century technology, most clients now have an online presence that endures after death, and forms an important part of estate planning and administration. In this course, we will examine the types of digital assets that a personal representative may need to address after a will maker's death, from social networking profiles to virtual assets and bitcoins. Such assets raise unique legal issues which will be discussed, including gaining access to accounts, protecting intellectual property rights, and converting digital assets for estate distribution.
Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 1 hour. This course will NOT involve aspects of professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management.
