Who should attend: Anyone who has taken a minimum of 40 hours of family mediation training and would like the opportunity to focus on exploring and consolidating mediator presence.

Learning level: Advanced

This advanced level course is designed for those who have participated in mediations as counsel or as mediators. It also will benefit those who work in the field of family law and have taken mediation training, yet have never “hung out their shingle” and offered their services as a family law mediator. The Family Law Act has created increased demand for mediation, and mediation expertise (whether as counsel or mediator) will be considered a core competency for lawyers practicing family law. Here is a rare opportunity to deepen your expertise.

Learning with a small group in a relaxed setting on beautiful Hornby Island promises to be a truly unique experience. The course is intended to be reflective and interactive in nature.

We will focus upon consolidating mediator presence, giving particular attention to:

  • deepening conflict analysis to create effective process
  • working with tough interpersonal dynamics in mediation
  • naming the struggle with courage, clarity, and compassion
  • being fully present and meeting clients “at the crossroads”
  • developing ways to work with anxious personalities and deep-rooted anger
  • letting go: helping parties overcome their fear of closure
  • managing complexities of multi-party mediation
  • taking the leap to becoming a mediator

Between sessions, participants will be free to walk Hornby’s beaches, experience the bluffs of Helliwell Park, cycle the island’s many wooded trails, enjoy a massage or a yoga session, and savour the delectable local cuisine.

Welcoming Reception: You are invited to a welcoming reception at the home of the Course Instructor Sally S. Campbell, from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm (location instructions to follow).

Prerequisite: 40 hours of family mediation training.

Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 16 hours (a minimum of 2 hours will involve aspects of professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
