Thursday, December 14, 2017
10:45 am - 12:15 pm

(Original course: Tuesday, April 19, 2016)

Who should attend: Lawyers who provide, or would like to provide partial services to clients

Learning level: Fundamental

The number of self-represented people is increasing. National studies have shown that the majority represent themselves because of the high cost of legal representation. High costs are also fueling the demand for discrete legal services. Often referred to as “unbundled” or “limited scope retainer” services, this work, when done effectively, provides an opportunity to increase your client base and increase access to justice. You will hear from lawyers who have offered discrete services to clients. Their experiences and insights can help you begin to develop your own approach to providing limited services in a way that meets your ethical and practice obligations.

At this course, you will learn about...

  • compelling reasons for assisting the self-represented
  • what kinds of people are self-represented?
  • what kinds of legal services are being provided?
  • how to manage the relationship
  • what to include in your retainer agreement
  • the most common complaints to the Law Society and how to avoid them
