About the Planning Committee/Course Presenters
Sharon Sutherland is a mediator and lawyer with expertise in conflict resolution training and program design. From 2000 to 2014, she was a full-time faculty member at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Law where, in addition to a range of substantive legal courses, she taught a clinical mediation program. She has taught dispute resolution at Thompson Rivers Law School since 2012. Sharon is a member of the Mediate BC Civil Roster and the Child Protection Roster. She is currently applying her dispute resolution and design skills as a knowledge engineer in the development of the Civil Resolution Tribunal. Sharon was honoured with the 2011 Susanna Jani Prize for Excellence in Mediation.
Kari D. Boyle is the Project Manager for Mediate BC’s “Family Unbundled Legal Services Project”. Until recently she was the Director of Strategic Initiatives and previously the Executive Director at Mediate BC. Kari enjoys using her legal, mediation, and management experience to assist Mediate BC and others to work collaboratively to improve BC citizens’ access to viable and affordable conflict resolution options. Previously, she practiced corporate commercial litigation in Vancouver for 14 years, worked in-house for 6 years specializing in legal services management, led mediation research projects at UBC, and has participated in many justice reform initiatives. Kari is a member of the BC Access to Justice Committee, Coordinator of the BC Family Justice Innovation Lab, and a board member of the BC Courthouse Library Society.
Howard Nemtin has been mediating since 1998 and has conducted over 2,000 mediations. Howard has an MBA from the University of Western Ontario and has worked in real estate development, project management, and economic consulting. He is the past vice-chair of the TransLink Board of Directors and served as board chair for Coast Mountain Bus Company. Howard also sits on the Board of Trustees of UniverCity on Burnaby Mountain. As a mediator, Howard’s strong business background helps him bring a focused approach to problem solving. His practice has largely concentrated on insurance, personal injury, corporate disputes, and real estate/construction issues. He has maintained a consistently high settlement rate throughout his mediation career. Howard also served as a mentor for 10 years in the Small Claims Court mediation program.
Adam Nott is General Counsel for SRK Consulting’s North American practices, where he advises on a wide range of legal matters and consults on governance and the private regulation of the mining industry. Prior to moving in-house he worked at a national firm, as a sole practitioner, and with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade’s litigation section. His experience working with counsel around the world on contract drafting and dispute resolution provides him with a wide view of some of the benefits and pitfalls of dispute resolution clauses.
Tony Wilson practices franchising, licensing, and intellectual property law at Boughton Law Corporation in Vancouver. He is ranked as a leading Canadian franchise lawyer by LEXPERT and Who's Who Legal, and is a member of the advisory committee to the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General respecting the new BC Franchises Act and Regulations. Tony is a Bencher of the Law Society of BC, an Adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser University, and teaches Ethical Lawyering at Thompson Rivers University Law School. He is the author of two books: Manage Your Online Reputation, a book written to guide individuals and businesses on how to monitor and protect their personal and corporate reputations on social media, and Buying a Franchise in Canada. Tony is a regular law and business columnist with the Globe and Mail, and writes regular columns for Bartalk magazine and Canadian Lawyer.
