Who should attend: Lawyers, paralegals, and legal administrative assistants who want to make better use of Word, Excel, and Outlook; lawyers and legal staff frustrated with Microsoft Word.

Learning level: Fundamental/Intermediate

Increase productivity using the technology you already have in your law firm. Most users are underutilizing or are unaware of the features available to them through Microsoft Office. Learn the intricacies of Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel and how they can benefit the legal profession. The first half of the day will be spent taking an in-depth look at the functions of Microsoft Word. The afternoon will be split between Outlook and Excel.

I.   Advanced Microsoft Word
Word classes designed for the general public just don't address the issues lawyers face when drafting legal instruments. In contrast, this class is designed by lawyers, for lawyers. Most find Microsoft Word to be a constant source of frustration. It's the primary tool we use to work, yet it so often seems to be working against us. No matter what you do, the formatting in a document you're working on will NOT do what you want. The more you adjust it, the worse it gets. No one can afford to spend as much time wrestling with formatting as they do creating the content. If you want to master Word, there are techniques to learn and rules to follow, but none of them are ascertainable by simply using Word. This seminar will teach you exactly how to attack common formatting issues, how to make the most of templates, and fix (or avoid) the common legal drafting problems plaguing you now.

II.   Microsoft Outlook's Greatest Hits
Outlook's calendar, contacts, and tasks features can be extremely valuable to legal users. You'll learn all of the ways you can take better advantage of these features to organize your practice and life; however, Outlook's most important function for most lawyers is email. Learn what Outlook can do to help you organize, search, and stay on top of your email. Discover what you never knew about a program you use every day!

III.   Microsoft Excel for Legal Users
If you have Microsoft Office, you have Excel. If you are like most legal users, you're either under-utilizing Excel or not using it at all. In this segment, we start with the basics and work our way up. You'll learn powerful ways that Excel can improve your work product and make your life easier. Produce flawless fiduciary accountings, amortization schedules, real estate closing statements, disbursement schedules, medical bill summaries, and graphical representations of data (pie charts, bar graphs, etc.). We'll also cover many useful formulas for use with dates, numbers, text, and logic.

BRING YOUR LAPTOP if you would like to follow along!
Seminar will be taught using Microsoft Office 2016. The course materials will work with Word 2007, 2010, 2013, and 2016 for Windows.
Are you a Mac user? Please let us know ahead of time. We can send you a Word for Mac 2011 or Mac 2016 manual so you can follow along. Word for Windows and Word for Mac have different interfaces, but they are capable of most of the same things, with some exceptions. Excel and Outlook manuals are the same for both Windows and Mac.

After taking this course you will:

  • regain lost billable time by ensuring you use your Microsoft technology to its maximum potential
  • know how to better organize your practice (and life) through the many features of Microsoft Outlook
  • feel confident drafting and formatting documents in Microsoft Word
  • understand how Microsoft Excel spreadsheets can work for you
  • gain legal-specific tips and tricks that you didn't know Microsoft Word can do
