Monday, April 3 and Tuesday, April 4, 2017
9:00 am – 5:00 pm
*Sea Breeze Lodge, Big Tree 3 – 2, Hornby Island
Limited enrollment. Register early to avoid disappointment!
Who should attend: Anyone who has taken a minimum of 40 hours of family or civil mediation training and would like the opportunity to focus on exploring and consolidating mediator presence.
Learning level: Advanced
This advanced level course is designed for those who have participated in mediations as counsel or as mediators. It also will benefit those who have taken mediation training, yet have never "hung out their shingle" and offered their services as a mediator. Public awareness and provincial legislation have created an increased demand for mediation, and mediation expertise (whether as counsel or mediator) is now widely considered to be a core competency for lawyers. Here is a rare opportunity to deepen your expertise.
We will focus on consolidating mediator presence, giving particular attention to:
- deepening conflict analysis to create effective process
- naming the struggle with courage, clarity, and compassion
- being fully present and grounded in tough situations
- developing ways to work with anxious personalities and deep-rooted anger
- letting go: helping parties overcome their fear of closure
- uncovering our strengths and exploring our challenges as mediators
Learning with a small group in a relaxed setting on beautiful Hornby Island is a truly unique experience. This course is reflective and interactive in nature. It does not include electronic teaching aids/materials. One participant described it as "an amazingly insightful and productive course...worthwhile, intense and helpful" (October 2016).
Between sessions, participants will be free to walk Hornby's beaches, experience the bluffs of Helliwell Park, cycle the island's many wooded trails, and savour the delectable cuisine of Hornby's famous Sea Breeze Lodge. The course is preceded by a reception at Sally Campbell's home on Sunday, April 2nd.
Prerequisite: A minimum of 40 hours of family or civil mediation training.
Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 16 hours (a minimum of 2 hours pertaining to professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
