"CLE Summer Series 2017"
Tuesday, August 1 and Wednesday, August 2, 2017
9:00 – 4:00 pm

Who should attend: Lawyers in all practice areas, judges, family justice counselors, mediators, arbitrators, parenting coordinators, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, law students and everyone whose work impacts children.

Learning level: All levels

Children in Canada have broad legal rights under domestic and international law such as the Charter and UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. These rights have the potential to support and protect children in justice and administrative decision-making. With a clear understanding of children’s rights and realities, legal professionals can make a significant contribution to improving children’s lives in the work they do.

This Conference will unveil the Child Rights Toolkit developed by and for legal professionals across Canada with the Canadian Bar Association’s National Children’s Law Committee, and profile the lived experiences of young people in accessing justice.

Participants will receive a Toolkit primer on the fundamentals of child rights in Canada and hear from young people on child rights challenges and successes they encounter across various areas of the law to better inform practice. Effectively listening to children will be a focus on the afternoon of day two. From the call for cultural competency in the Truth and Reconciliation recommendations to the emergence of child advocacy centres and the Aboriginal Family Court, this Conference will update you on key recent developments affecting your practice. Participants will leave with better knowledge and tools to strengthen how they put child rights into action.

Children’s legal entitlements apply across all areas of legal practice: Aboriginal law; administrative law, dispute resolution, constitutional law and human rights; criminal justice; health law; immigration law; family law, child protection, privacy and access; SOGIC (sexual orientation and gender identity), and wills, estates and trusts. Children’s lives do not begin and end with any particular area of the law, so join us to reflect on how you can strengthen your practice in support of children.
