Who should attend: Criminal lawyers, both crown and defence.

Learning level: Intermediate

For criminal law practitioners, the bulk of matters originating in the Provincial Court will remain in the Provincial Court unless a process such as a preliminary inquiry dictates otherwise. There are, however, situations where matters from the Provincial Court may move up to the Supreme Court — this is the domain of criminal chambers practice in Supreme Court.

This course is aimed to give you a solid grounding in the substantive and process elements of criminal chambers practice.

At this course you will learn:

  • how to manage bail review—the law and the process
  • how to manage bail in murder cases—the practical and legal considerations
  • the current state of 90-day reviews—in a post-Jordan world
  • how to avoid pitfalls and prepare good affidavit evidence
  • valuable tips for managing affidavits in a variety of common contexts from bail reviews to summary conviction appeals
  • how to effectively manage legal aid coverage in a range of fluid Supreme Court chambers contexts
  • how to manage summary conviction appeals: from the law, to nuts and bolts procedure, to best practices

Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 3 (a minimum of 1 hour will involve professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
