Who should attend: Lawyers practicing in the areas of elder law; wills, estates, and trusts; and family law. This conference may also be of interest to health care professionals, social workers, advocacy groups, financial trustees, and anyone concerned with the rights of the elderly.

Learning level: Intermediate/Advanced

The Canadian Elder Law Conference is a two-day forum on the law and policy issues impacting older clients, featuring practical skill-based sessions, updates on hot topics, and current research on law and aging-related topics. Elder law is a multifaceted topic touching on diverse areas of practice, including wills and estates, family law, pensions and benefits, healthcare rights, privacy law, and criminal law practice. Expect sessions on hot topics such as mental capacity issues, substitute decision making, physician-assisted death, cross-border issues, and financial abuse.  Hear from practice leaders from across the country, including lawyers, medical experts, and financial sector professionals.

After taking this course, you will:

  1. be better able to identify and address the legal issues that impact your older client in wills and estates, family, pensions and benefits, health care rights and other practice areas
  2. be familiar with recent trends, developments and research in the law with respect to elder law topics such as medical assistance in dying; mental capacity, undue influence, independent legal advice; financial abuse; and adult protection
  3. better understand the legal, practical, and ethical issues in relation to older clients with mental capacity issues and self-neglect issues

You can also register for the two-day event taking place on Thursday, November 2 and Friday, November 3, 2017: Canadian Elder Law Conference - Coming of Age: Elder Law in Canada and its Future.
