Learning level: Fundamental/Intermediate
While tax law changes constantly, there are times when the pace and number of changes are greater than usual. The last few years have been one of those periods. This year we have changed the name of our Tax Issues for Commercial Practitioners program to reflect the changes in this area of law.
There have been significant international and domestic changes that have affected some of the basic assumptions of how the taxation system operates. As lawyers, it is critical to understand how the tax system functions in the contemporary world. The topics addressed in this course will speak to these new developments and are designed to ensure that commercial solicitors and business advisors understand how the tax system will approach the transactions and problems their clients will bring to them.
Topics discussed will include:
- new domestic and international initiatives in tax policy and administration
- changes to the principal residence exemption
- the foreign offshore buyer's tax and the vacant home's tax
- changes to provincial sales tax and GST
- an update on personal taxation
- an update on corporate taxation
- an update on trusts and estate taxation
