Who should attend: Lawyers, legal support staff, and anyone else who wants to deal with perfectionism.
Learning level: All levels
- Do you believe that anything less than a superb result is a failure?
- When you receive compliments do you disqualify them because you know you don’t really deserve them?
- Do you revise documents over and over again and have a hard time letting go?
Lawyers strive for excellence in their work and the legal culture encourages that. It can be difficult to distinguish a healthy desire to do the best job possible from the potentially harmful effects of perfectionism. The pursuit of perfection can come at a high cost, and can lead to negative results.
In this course you will learn what perfectionism is all about, how to recognize it in yourself, and how to evaluate where you are on the spectrum. Derek LaCroix, QC, Executive Director of the Lawyers Assistance Program of BC, and Allison Wolf, Executive Coach and President of the lawyer coaching organization Shift Works Strategic, will discuss the specific manifestations and outcomes of perfectionism, and will introduce a series of steps for dealing with it in your life.
Perfectionism can help us to achieve heights of performance but left unchecked can cause us a great deal of anxiety and lead to performance deficits. Join us for this CLE-TV and take the first step towards understanding and acting on the perfectionism that could be dragging you down. “The perfect is the enemy of the good”— Voltaire.
