About the Course Instructors

Scott Bartos is the Chief Risk Officer for Borden Ladner Gervais LLP. He is also the Chair of the Firm's National Risk Committee. 

Scott is a seasoned executive with experience in both risk management and compliance. Prior to joining the firm in 2016, Scott held a number of executive risk management roles with one of the largest international financial institutions in world. His experience included acting as the Bank's Chief Compliance Officer in Canada for seven years and as a regional compliance executive in New York City for two years. Prior to that, Scott was a senior member of the Bank's internal Legal Department.

Scott began his career with a large national law firm where he was a partner in the financial services group for over 12 years.

As Chief Risk Officer, Scott is responsible for ensuring that the firm implements an enterprise wide risk management framework capable of identifying and mitigating the various risks faced by the firm.

Barbara Buchanan provides confidential practice and ethics advice to lawyers in a wide variety of practice situations through her role at the Law Society of BC. She also writes articles and prepares practice resources on behalf of the Law Society.  

Before taking on her practice advice role, Barbara was in private legal practice, was an adjudicator for administrative tribunals, and was General Counsel of an international company. She has also taught law courses in a variety of settings in BC and abroad. 

Barbara was called to the BC bar in 1988. She has a master’s degree in special education and has a background as a consultant for people with disabilities and people working with them. 

Barbara is a member of a variety of local and international professional and community organizations. She is currently a co-chair of the CBABC’s Elder Law Section.
