CLE Summer Series 2017
Tuesday, August 1, 2017
9:00 am – 10:30 am
(Original date: Wednesday, June 21, 2017)
Who should attend: Recent graduates of paralegal training programs and new legal administrative assistants. This course will also be of interest to paralegals and legal administrative assistants already working, but who want to up their game.
Learning level: Fundamental
Ethics: As a paralegal new to the profession, you have successfully completed your education. How do you effectively transition into the workplace if you have little or no law office experience? Ethics for Paralegals is an addition to the Paralegal Core Competency Series launched in May/June 2016 intended to provide a foundation for a successful transition into the workplace.
Ethics for Paralegals is designed for paralegals who have completed their paralegal education and are entering the workplace. This could also benefit junior paralegals currently employed who wish to enhance their skills, as well as legal administrative assistants in entry level positions. You will learn the ethical rules that govern a lawyer's conduct, including the duty to the court, clients and other lawyers, dealing with unrepresented litigants, conflicts of interest, undertakings, duty of confidentiality, and use of documents. You will also learn about the supervisory role between a lawyer and a paralegal and the responsibilities that flow from the lawyer/paralegal relationship. Paralegals should be aware of these ethical obligations and conduct themselves in accordance with those obligations to increase professionalism within your firm and reduce exposure to complaints.
Also in the Paralegal Core Competency Series is the course:
Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 1.5 hours (including a minimum of 1.5 hours pertaining to professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
Please note that the CPD hours of rebroadcasts may differ from the CPD hours of the original, live program.
