This month’s spotlight shines on Renée Aldana of South Coast Law Group.

How did you first get involved with CLEBC?

My very first contribution was during my articling year when I was doing some research for one of the lawyers in the firm who was writing a paper and doing a presentation. That was in 2007. Since then, I’ve been asked to contribute on my own in various ways since 2015. I’m always honoured to be asked.

What are you currently working on (or have most recently worked on) with CLEBC?

My most recent contribution was a chapter in Financial Issues in Family Law on income issues under the Child Support Guidelines.

What inspired you to practice family law?

Like many family lawyers, I fell into it. I articled in a small, full-service firm in Surrey that had the most work for me in the family law department. I was soon able to see how I could help regular people move on from the worst time in their lives to a new future. It’s all I’ve wanted to do since then.

Throughout your career, you have made significant contributions to the legal profession, including presenting at courses, serving on several boards, and volunteering for Access Pro Bono BC. What motivates you to give back?

I grew up in a family where volunteerism was very important. As an adult, it was second nature to find ways to give back.

What advice would you pass on to a newly called lawyer?

My grandmother used to tell me that you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar. My first boss in law showed me how building relationships was beneficial not only to collegiality in the bar, but is also in your clients’ interests when you can work well with opposing counsel. My advice: be a lawyer other lawyers can trust and want to work with. Be friendly and respectful while still being a strong advocate for your client.

Other than law, what are you passionate about?

Fitness is a huge part of my life. Every day starts with a workout. At the end of the day, escaping into a novel is my key to winding down.

What are you looking forward to most in 2026?

My husband and I love to travel. In 2026, we may get to both Portugal and the Philippines, if I can make the timing work for both.
